Girl Talk: Let Go of Resentment

The other day I was hanging out with DIVA Helaine Harris (http://www.helainezharris.com) at her home near Lake Balboa here in Los Angeles. In addition to being a DIVA, she happens to be an amazing psychotherapist and spiritual teacher. So as you can imagine, every time I have even the most casual conversation with her, I come away with a some helpful knowledge.

So that day we were talking about her upcoming appearance on my show and I asked her advice on a situation I was having that was bothering me. She said, “Zoe, I’m sure this will work itself out but you have to make sure that you don’t start to harbor resentment toward this person because resentment only negatively effects the person who harbors the resentment. The person being resented never feels the pain.”

Okay, so that made me gasp. I had to get on my blackberry and google “resentment”. Not that I didn’t believe her but I needed a third-party confirmation. (It’s the journalist in me!). Everything that came up, said the same basically the same thing:

“By contrast, resentment does not have any direct negative effects on the person being resented, save for the deterioration of the relationship involved.”

You can do your own Google and see what you come up with. However, I’m convinced that letting an irritation or wrong-doing go and taking the high road is hands-down the best solution to bothersome people and things. Afterall, if harboring resentment toward someone is ruining YOUR day and not theirs, what’s the point, right? I mean lets be real here. Why give yourself high blood-pressure over something that the other person is not even being effected by?

I heard something the other day that says it all in a nutshell: “Don’t be like a chicken or a crow and squabble amongst yourself and others. Be like an eagle. They are stronger, more powerful and can fly to higher altitudes than chickens and crows. So when one of those birds bothers an eagle, they don’t even bother to fight with them. They just soar up to heights that chickens and crows can’t reach.”  Wouldn’t you rather be an eagle? It’s just a thought.

Have a great day!

Girl Talk: Creating Boundaries

Do you avoid confrontation with people because you are afraid of getting hurt? Well, today we are going to discuss handling boundaries. DIVA Helaine Harris and I spoke about this recently and here are the nuggets I learned that I want to pass along to you.

It’s about us learning how to forgive our enemies, people who annoy us and treat us unfairly . It’s not really that you’re doing this for the other person. We do this so we don’t spend out lives being tormented and upset. It’s not for the other person, it’s for ourself.  You’re not spending your life being upset with someone whose off having a great time. There’s freedom in that. When your heart is full of anger and bitterness, you are not free.

When you begin to live like this, you learn to stay inside your border where you’re safe. When you step out of your boundary and try to get back at other people, then that’s when you get yourself into trouble.

We spend so much time talking about people who aggravate us but we won’t talk to the people who aggravate us and telling them what is or isn’t acceptable.

It’s a margin or a border we set in our life. We have to set boundaries in our life.

For example, when I was 18 and moved into my first apartment with a roomate, we had a boy in our building whose place was the party apartment. He had an open door policy. You could come over anytime you like, door was always open, you didn’t even have to knock. He and I started dating. Now  me, I’m the opposite I like to know when people are coming over. I lived downstairs from him and he used to just roll up on me at my place.  And so I finally had to tell him: “I’d really rather you not come over without calling first. At first he was offended, “Well, I’m your boyfriend and I live downstairs.” I had to explain that wasn’t trying to be rude but that was my boundary.

We need to not only set our own boundaries, but we need to respect other peoples boundaries and not get aggravated about it because everyone is entitled to having their boundaries respected.

If your neighbor’s dog poos on your lawn and you don’t have a fence, you can’t get mad at the neighbor. But if you have a fence then your neighbor is going to have to be a lunatic to pick his dog up and put him over and let him poo on your lawn, then you have a right to be mad.

So what we need to do is put up some fences in our life and stop letting everyone walk all over us and then get mad at them because they do it.  Can I get an amen?

Are you resentful because you feel someone is now or has taken advantage of you? Well, you know resentment is a really bad thing and sometimes a little hard to detect. Resentment is a deep root that gets deep within you and does something with your attitude. You start thinking things about people like: “I dont like your shoes, the way you look, your voice” it seeps into your attitude. I think it’s the reason why people have depression or chip on their shoulders.

Maybe you set boundaries and donn’t enforce those boundaries? If you say things like: “Do that one more time, and  (insert a consequence) then next time that person does it you have to do what you said you were going to do. If no, then our borders and boundaries become a joke. So we need to be strong with our boundaries.

It’s just a thought.

Have a wonderful day!

MICHAEL TODD! SINGULIERE PERFUME!

MICHAELTODDWishing y’all the best and happiest Fourth of July ever! Goddess Granny is celebrating in rainy South Texas but wherever you are I hope you have a fun-filled day, even if you’re outside the USA because we really don’t need a reason to pop a few corks and polish off some snacks (healthy of course?) here at Meg’s because anytime is a great day to celebrate feeling good and looking great!

For us here in the US, the 4th usually means that the official Summer-party season is ON and that anything normally only worn, eaten, or done in mass-quantities of steamy indulgence is allowed for a few short weeks so break out the bikinis and enjoy like you did when you were a kid!

It can be a bit more challenging to keep one’s face and self cool and collected when the temps soar but we’ve already chatted about some ways to be your prettiest when you’re hot (and not in the good way…) by lightening up on your makeup and giving your hair a break from all the heat-styling and products and how to use self-tanners to fake your glow safely. I’ve also “noticed” that it can be a time to re-evaluate what you choose to smell like as well: the sexy-scents that might be memorable the rest of the year sometimes end up smelling like fruit salad left out in the sun when it’s warmer and anything that is considered “heavy” can really be overwhelming and unpleasant when you’re trying to be fresh and inviting on a truly humid day!
